Adam Read - Resource Efficiency and Waste Management Practice Director

Adam Read is a recognised authority on waste strategy management and has over 16 years of operational waste management experience. Adam's approach to his work has gained him a well-earned reputation as a knowledge leader and innovator in his field of expertise. He was recently awarded an honorary professorship for his pioneering work on waste communication and public engagement.  He is responsible for directing, managing and contributing to a range of consultancy projects in the areas of waste management strategy, recycling service design and delivery, stakeholder engagement, product policy, life-cycle thinking and behaviour change.

andy Maunder

Andy Maunder – Group Business Manager

Andy is a Managing Consultant at Ricardo Energy & Environment and Delivery Manager for the Resource Efficiency and Waste Management Practice Area, with an annual revenue budget of almost £10m. Andy supports the Practice Director, Dr Adam Read, in the management of a team of over 75 consultants and specific responsibilities include: budget and target setting, monitoring and reporting; business planning; recruitment; quality assurance compliance and project management training/mentoring, including financial systems reporting. Andy has over 17 years of consultancy experience, is a Member of the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management (CIWM) and is an active member of the Waste Prevention Special Interests Group (SIG) – a group of representatives from Government, academia, private sector and local authorities that meets quarterly and is active in promoting the UK waste prevention agenda. His research work has included ground-breaking studies for Defra’s Waste Evidence Branch to inform the household waste prevention evidence base, model the impact of lifestyle changes on future household waste arisings and a UK wide investigation into waste growth trends.

Phil White

Phil White - Due Diligence Business Area Manager

Phil is a Chartered Waste Manager with over 18 years’ experience in the environment sector, including 15 years in waste management regulation, policy and consultancy. Phil leads on waste technologies, due diligence and expert witness services. Since joining Ricardo Energy & Environment, Phil has managed and directed a number of complex and broad ranging projects including in relation to mechanical biological treatment (MBT) performance expert witness; refuse derived fuel (RDF) quality and export; incinerator bottom ash (IBA) recovery; energy from waste (EfW) technologies; and end of waste decision making tools. 

As a consultant for over 8 years, Phil is experienced in providing technical advice and policy support, including in relation to biological and thermal waste treatment technology performance for residual and source separated waste; residual waste treatment procurement competitive dialogue support for local authorities and bidders; options appraisal including analysis of markets and technical and commercial risk; and environmental sustainability analysis. Phil was named an approved consultant to the Composting Association (now the Organics Recycling Group, Renewable Energy Association) in 2007.

Phil previously spent 8 years with the Environment Agency in waste policy, waste strategy, operations and enforcement, developing an in depth working knowledge of waste legislation. As a consultant, between 2007 and 2011 Phil managed extensive waste policy framework support to the Environment Agency. He was lead Technical Advisor to the joint Agency and WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) end of waste Quality Protocols Programme, leading the development of a number of Protocols and advising on complex technical and definition of waste issues.

SJ Widdowson

Sarahjane Widdowson – Business Area Manager for Procurement and Waste Operations

Sarahjane is a principal waste management consultant with over fifteen years' experience in the environmental sector. She specialises in waste and recycling technical advisory working for the public private and third sector.

Sarahjane joined Ricardo after working for Haringey Council as Recycling Improvement and Development Manager and previously Hyder Consulting where she was the waste teams national communications coordinator and public sector waste management lead.

Her key areas of expertise are: Waste management and street care operational reviews; optimising performance advice; composition and characterisation studies; set-out monitoring; materials capture rate analysis; customer feedback surveys; site based assessments and visual inspections; benchmarking performance and best practice; time and motion studies; vehicle load analysis; re-routing studies; efficiency ratings; CBA; contract monitoring; enforcement advice; trade waste scheme analysis and options; operational staff assessments and engagement.

Jess Twemlow – Circular Economy Business Area Manager

Jess is a Chartered Waste Manager with over 13 years’ experience in the environment sector. Jess leads on Ricardo Energy & Environment’s Circular Economy services. She has directed and managed a range of circular economy related projects, including researching circular economy sector opportunities; providing sustainable procurement support for public sector organisations; supporting businesses with the development of circular economy business models; reviewing asset sharing and re-use opportunities; minimising packaging waste in the food and drink sector; and delivering Love Food Hate Waste communication campaigns.

Jess also leads Resource Efficient Scotland’s SME training and capacity building activity, and regularly delivers training workshops and webinars that help decision-makers realise the benefits of resource efficiency and circular economy business models. She has an excellent working knowledge of resource efficiency within the healthcare sector, over the last 10 years she has worked for over 50 NHS Trusts and Boards in Scotland, England and Wales.

Brian Mayne

Brian Mayne – Client Manager for Wales

Brian Mayne is the Regional Director for Wales. He is a fellow of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management, Chartered Environmentalist and is an ISWA International Waste Manager and a registered Expert Advisor to the National Assembly of Wales on waste management.

Brian has extensive experience of contract development and has led technical teams on the procurement of a range of activities from waste collections, transfer stations, MRF operations and waste transport right through to 'Design, Build, Finance and Operate' contracts for treatment facilities such as Anaerobic Digestors.

Brian is also a specialist in communications and behaviour change and established 'Waste Awareness Wales' for the Welsh Government.

He has also delivered a range of training on environmental and waste issues for the public and private sector. He is a registered CIWM Waste Smart Trainer

Jamie Pitcairn

Jamie Pitcairn - Client Manager for Scotland

Jamie has over 12 years commercial experience of managing and directing national and regional Government environmental and waste programmes and leading technical research projects. He is a technical specialist in waste and resource efficiency and Jamie has been heavily involved over the last few years both as a member of the Scottish Government’s ‘Zero Waste Think Tank’ and in the drafting of the Zero Waste Regulations as a member of the Scottish Governments review Board. Throughout his career Jamie has been closely involved in the development and delivery of 100’s resource efficiency projects for the private, public and third sectors regarding the opportunities and benefits of resource efficiency and process improvement. Jamie also sits on the Government’s Waste Data Review Board and supported the Scottish Government in drafting the new Waste Hierarchy Guidance. Jamie is a chartered member of the CIWM and chairs Institute’s strategy group on business waste and resource efficiency in Scotland.

Jamie is able to combine both his strong technical expertise with his policy development knowledge providing valuable insights when directing technical projects. As an experienced project director Jamie is responsible for the delivery of many of Ricardo Energy & Environment’s waste and resource efficiency projects in Scotland which range from large programmes to smaller policy focused research projects covering: resource efficiency, waste management and energy from waste.
