Daressa Frodsham, Practice Director

Daressa has been with us since March 2016, and brings a wealth of experience from the water sector, having been Head of Engineering at United Utilities. She was also previously at Clayton Environmental Consultants, Biwater Europe and Bechtel. Daressa’s experience includes managing a £45m business unit with several hundred staff, securing profitable new revenue streams, development of management skills and systems, managing supplier and stakeholder relations as well as leading on a variety of major change programmes.

John Sanders
John Sanders, Managing Consultant

John is a hydrologist and environmental scientist with 20 years experience in the UK water industry. As a Managing Consultant within the Cascade Practice, John directs a range of water resource, hydrological and environmental assessment projects. Previously John held various strategic roles at United Utilities covering both water and wastewater issues.

Liz Baker
Liz Baker, Managing Consultant

Liz Baker is an environmental scientist with a background in geography and environmental technology. With over 19 years in environmental consultancy experience. Liz has technical and project direction experience in strategic water resources planning and assessment, drought studies, EIA, SEA and HRA, planning, environmental management, ecological management and the design and specification of surveys and monitoring programmes.

Topsy Rudd
Topsy Rudd, Managing Consultant

Dr Topsy Rudd is an environmental scientist with more than 30 years consultancy experience. She specialises in strategic planning and environmental assessment for clients in the utilities and commercial development sectors and has developed best practice guidance on EIA, SEA and HRA for IEMA, UKWIR, the Environment Agency and local government.  She has overseas experience in Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand and UAE.

Trevor Wade
Trevor Wade, Managing Consultant

Trevor is a hydrologist with a background in aquatic ecology and coastal processes. He has over 16 years experience and specialises in R&D for UK Water Industries Research and the Environment Agency on in-river water quality, wastewater treatment and effluent quality. He has particular expertise in the hydro-ecological impacts of climate change and abstraction.

Claire Deery, Principal Consultant

Claire is a Chartered Environmentalist with over 15 years experience of environmental assessment and project management. Her experience includes writing EIA screening opinions and leading the environmental assessments from consideration of early alternatives through design to construction on several key infrastructure projects.

Stuart Ballinger, Principal Consultant

Stuart has significant experience directing, managing and delivering water related projects at Ricardo Energy & Environment. He has supported a range of public and private sector clients and has specialist knowledge in industrial and commercial water use, water policy and water efficient technologies. Stuart has led the development and delivery of a number of high profile water reduction initiatives, including the United Kingdom’s first voluntary water reduction commitment specifically for the food sector (the Federation House Commitment), the Big Splash and Rippleffect.

Ben Stansfield, Managing Consultant

Ben is a chartered town planner with over twenty years’ experience of successfully leading multi-disciplinary Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) teams and has a track record of delivering complex infrastructure consents across the UK. As Head of the EIA team in the Water and Environment Practice, Ben directs a range of planning, EIA and water resource projects. Previously Ben headed up the planning and estates team within one of the UK’s main waste management companies.

Hugh Martineau

Hugh is the agricultural Business Area Manager in Ricardo Energy & Environment and a farming production systems specialist. Hugh oversees delivery of a range of agriculture projects for farming groups, governments and the EU, and has a particular interest in the environmental impact of agriculture activities on water quality. He has been involved with government advice programmes such as the Catchment Sensitive Farming Delivery Initiative (Natural England) and led the advice project for the Nitrates Action Programme (Environment Agency) and the Farming Advice Service (Defra).

Mark Broomfield is Ricardo Energy & Environment’s Business Area Manager for environmental impact assessments. Mark specialises in supporting and advising on planning applications and appeals and delivering environmental risk assessments. He has particular expertise regarding the use of hydraulic fracturing for shale gas developments.

Richard Smithers

Richard Smithers is Ricardo Energy & Environment’s Principal Consultant for Biodiversity & Ecosystem Services. He has worked in the environmental sector for 30 years and has led or input in to projects across the UK, Europe and internationally. He has wide-ranging experience of evidence and policy development, practical land management, community involvement and citizen science and specialises in ecosystem-based approaches: assessing people’s impacts and dependencies on the natural environment and identifying means of reducing associated costs and amplifying benefits.
